Android N Name Will Be Known in a 'Few Weeks'

Last month at the company's developer-focused conference Google I/O, the search giant took it upon itself to take Android fans on a solely-for-entertainment-purposes ride by asking them for name suggestions for its newest version of the mobile OS, Android N.

That contest, so to speak, was supposed to last until June 8 and now that the date has come and gone, Google has said that it will reveal the name for Android N - which might or might not be a fan suggestion - in "a few weeks" time. The company also made a video reminiscent of its April 1 efforts back then to inspire people to come up with names, and it's following that up with another one that you can see below.

Android N will release in the fall with the new Nexus devices, and then will ship out to supporting devices over a period of two weeks to six months, depending on how responsive the manufacturer of your smartphone is. That means the world of Android users is heavily fractured at any given point, with Android 6.0 Marshmallow only recently hitting the double-digit mark.

Currently, the newest version of Android is available as a "developer preview" for a select bunch of devices. Android N is expected to bring in quite a few improvements that we already know of, from better multi-tasking, seamless updates and possibly the killer feature of all - instant apps.

Google also announced tons of new things alongside Android N developments at Google I/O last month, most notably the Alexa competitor Google Home, a new VR framework Daydream and two new messaging apps - Allo and Duo - amidst improvements to Android Wear, Auto and TV. Get more information...
